Hello friends, it’s Melissa.
“Charlotte was peppered with fish camps in the late 70s and early 80s. So it made sense to serve a fish sandwich,” Showmars CEO Dean Peroulas told Philip for the latest in our Charlotte’s Classic Eats series.
This statement alone brings back so many memories of my childhood, where going to “the fish camp” was a regular activity in my family. Of course, when I think of Showmars, I don’t think of fish camps at all – I think of gyro platters and Greek salads and baklava – but when I read Philip’s story, the connection clicked. George Couchell – affectionately known as “Mr. C” – started the restaurant during that the fish camp era. “He developed a house-made tartar sauce and the sandwich sold like crazy,” Peroulas said.
One of my favorite parts of our Classic Eats stories is learning little tidbits like that. Telling food stories is so important – because it’s never just about a fish sandwich.
